Which clothing label do you need?

Name labels for school and camp

Label every item that leaves the house: sweaters, coats, hats, gym clothes, water bottles and lunch boxes. Put the label inside the neck or waistband where it is easy to find but not scratchy. Use first name and surname, or first name and initial for privacy; some camps ask for full names and cabin numbers. Printable iron-on labels last many washes when applied with firm, even heat; laundry-safe marker pens are a quick backup for socks and small items.

Handmade by labels for makers

A small woven or printed label finishes a handmade garment, quilt or knitted gift and tells people who made it. Common wording: “Handmade by [name]”, “Made with love by…”, your brand name or logo, and sometimes the year. For items you sell, add your website so customers can find you again. Printable fabric sheets are an affordable way to test designs before ordering woven labels in bulk.

Care label wording

Care labels usually give the fibre content and washing instructions, such as “Machine wash cold, gentle cycle”, “Do not tumble dry”, “Cool iron” and “Do not bleach”. Many countries require fibre content and care information on clothing that is sold — in the US, the FTC Textile and Care Labeling Rules apply; the EU and UK have textile labelling rules too. Check the rules where you sell. For handmade gifts, a care label is simply a thoughtful extra.

How to attach clothing labels

1. Iron-on: print on iron-on transfer paper (use the right type for light or dark fabric), cut out, place on the garment and press firmly with a hot, dry iron for the time on the paper’s instructions. Let it cool before peeling the backing.
2. Printable fabric: print on fabric sheets, heat-set if instructed, cut out, fold under the edges and sew around them or into a seam.
3. Sticker labels: for shoes, bottles and boxes — laundry-safe stickers exist for clothing tags but check the packaging.
4. Swing tags: print on card, punch a hole and attach with string or a tag gun.

Label sizes

Name labels for clothing are usually about 2 × ½ to 2½ × 1 inch; small enough to fit a collar or waistband. Handmade labels range from 1 × 2 inches for knits to 2 × 3 inches for quilts. Swing tags are often 2 × 3.5 inches — business-card size. The printable sheets in the pack include several sizes so you can test which fits your garments.

Tips for long-lasting labels

• Wash the garment once before applying iron-on labels to remove finishes that stop adhesion.
• Turn clothes inside out and wash cool to extend label life.
• Avoid putting iron-on labels on stretchy or textured fabrics; sew fabric labels there instead.
• Test one label before labelling a whole school uniform set.
